How You Can Make Home Improvement an Environmental Matter

As the years go by, we are all increasingly conscious (or at least we should be) of the fact that our society is wreaking a lot of havoc on the environment, and yet there are frighteningly few of us that actually choose to do anything about it.  While many people out there are simply waiting for one mega-solution to be implemented by the government, the reality of the situation is that it is going to take many tiny and very deliberate actions on behalf of regular people to get anywhere on the issue of environmental degradation.  As the experts have repeated time and time again, we need to think globally and act locally, taking into our own hands the responsibility of improving our society's footprint on the environment.  This leaves many people scratching their heads and asking themselves, "What can I do to achieve positive change in this regard?"  One of the most important ways in which we can all achieve such change is actually a lot closer to home than we'd imagine, no pun intended; home renovation work can and should be the vessel through which the average person can become involved in the struggle for greater environmental sustainability, and here's why and how:

Why? What could the average home owner really have to do with the whole issue of environmental contamination and all its many regrettable effects?  Why should people feel that there is any sort of connection here?  Well, because residential households are major engines of unsustainability, plain and simple.  While most people look to major industries as the big culprits, there is an enormous environmental toll wrought by ordinary people living in inefficient homes and with inefficient habits.  It is therefore everyone's responsibility to reassess the systems in their homes and the habits that they have at home in order to achieve greater efficiency in the use of electrical power, potable water, and natural gas (the three environmental concerns that relate directly to residential homes).  With this realization, average citizens can begin to use home renovation and improvement to make a change for the better for the planet.

How? There is much that can be done in terms of home improvement to change the environmental footprint of your house, and doing so will not only constitute an act of solidarity but will also help you live more comfortably.  Consider the following home renovation projects as ways to accomplish your part in creating a greener world:

  • Improving home insulation is a critical task, as it will decrease both your electrical and gas consumption at home as a result of a more stable home climate.  To do so, you could change both your home's siding materials as well as windows, two critical factors in achieving effective insulation.
  • Another idea has to do with the kinds of appliances and systems you have at home, many of which are consuming much more electricity, gas and water than necessary.  Focus on one area of the home at a time, starting with the kitchen perhaps, as this is where the highest concentration of appliances is to be found (fridge, stove, oven, dishwasher, toasters, etc.).
